Every new part starts the same way, with an engineer reading a spec and opening a blank sketch. The requirements are already written down, the standards the part has to meet already exist, and yet the first day of modeling is spent translating one into the other by hand.
CAD generation changes where the work starts. Instead of a blank sketch, you start from the spec itself. Describe the part in plain language, a gusseted motor mount for a 12 kg motor at a 2.0 safety factor in 6061-T6, a 1.5 mm sheet metal enclosure with louvers and PEM studs to your standard, a manifold with four ports rated to 3,000 psi, and the Design Agent turns the requirements into a model.
Planning Before Modeling
Most automation jumps straight to doing, which is why most automation produces work someone has to redo. The Design Agent plans first. It takes in the scope, the constraints, and the applicable standards, and when something is missing it asks, whether that is the safety factor, the hole style, or the material. The questions an experienced engineer would ask before modeling get asked before modeling.
Parametric by Default, Checked as It Is Built
The output is not a dumb solid or a mesh you have to rebuild. The agent generates an editable, parametric model with named dimensions that stay editable in your CAD, so changing a hole diameter or a wall thickness later is a parameter change, not a remodel.
Your standards are applied at creation rather than caught in review. The model is checked as it is built, against your design checks, your preferred materials, and your drafting standards, so what lands in front of the engineer is a reviewed first draft rather than a late one that review sends back.
The Engineer Stays Accountable
Generated never means unreviewed. Every generated part goes through the engineer, who reviews, redirects in plain language when something needs to change, and approves. The judgment stays with the person, and the setup work moves to the agent.
That is the point of CAD generation. It is not about removing the engineer from design, it is about removing the blank sketch from the engineer's day, so the time goes to judgment instead of setup.
